BEING A TRAV
As I reflect of the year that's been and think about the year ahead. I can't stop considering what it means to be a trav or traveller. What does that mean and what do we have in common?
I came up and coined the term 'trav' on my way back from Brazil at the age of 19 I had travelled around Brazil and discovered how easy it was to get around a foreign country even if you don't speak the language. In fact the world is extremely well travelled and everywhere you go you meet people travelling and back packing off on an adventure. All at different stages of their trip and lives.
I thought it was a funny name I'm a trav not a chav. As I arrived at the airport collected by Dad I had experienced another world and it was a lot of fun.
One of the things I love about travelling is the research. Finding kooky sites and little bits of advice to help you on your journey. I hate over planning and I hate knowing every minute of every trip but some good old fashioned planning is very important! One of my favourite sites of all time is called the http://www.travelindependent.info/. It was there I learnt some of my key pieces of travel advice such as what countries would be epic to visit how to navigate away from the crowds and the tourists and how to have to some good old fashioned great experiences.
The happiest traveler is the lightest traveller. I really don’t doubt this is the single piece of best advice I have been given. I love to decant all my possessions into tiny containers and only bring the most minimal and lightest packs. As time goes on and I have a car you can bring more but really if you think about it you still won’t use everything you bring.
When I started the Word of Mouth Guide project I didn’t really think about how travel brings people together. A year into the project and I can see a bunch of strangers coming and working together on a project and I truly believe travelling opens your mind and breaks down so many barriers.
As I am going into a New Year and reflecting on the past year and also what I want to achieve in the next. Being a trav is still at the heart of my plans. My most memorable moments last year were when away and those moments you can’t describe and never expect. I am looking forward to more journey’s, more adventures and learning and growing. I am looking forward to creating more projects and collaborating and moving homes and most of all I am looking forward to being in the moment and enjoying what life has to offer.
If you have any travel stories, advice or hustles to share, I would love to hear from you and share your stories! Please get in touch with any travel ideas or collaborations. Let’s make 2017 a great one.
